Almost 100 Cub Scouts and their parents gathered for this Space Derby
All the hand made rockets had to be weighed in.

Each rocket was hand made - by the Cub Scout and his Mom and/or Dad.
This is a Webelos Scout, one of five that are going into Holy Cross Troop 515 in February
What is a Cub Scout Space Derby?
The Cub Scout and his Dad, and/or Mom together build a hand made rocket ship.The rocket is propelled by 5 rubber bands on a wire track stretching from one end of the Parish Hall to the other.
Prizes were given for the Best Paint job, Best Design, and Most Unique AND for time trial winners according to age groups. Trophies were awarded.

One of the surprises was Sal Porta, now a grandfather of a Cub in Pack 515 BUT who started Pack 515 almost 30 years ago. This is his son with him.
Of course, there's was plenty of food and this line was about this long all afternoon
The was the track on which the rockets ran. There were four wires like piano wires that ran from one end of the Parish Hall to the other. Four rockets - all powered by five rubber bands - could race at one time. The pennants were used to mark off the area where the racing wires were.
